Window Rebates in Michigan for 2026: What Grand Rapids, MI Homeowners Can Still Claim
If you replaced windows in 2023, 2024 or 2025, you may remember the federal tax credit that helped offset the cost. That credit is gone for windows installed after December 31, 2025. In 2026, the main help left for Grand Rapids, Michigan homeowners is a pair of small utility rebates, plus a state program that is aimed at whole-home upgrades rather than windows.
This guide covers what is still available, what each program asks for, and how much it is realistically worth on a typical West Michigan window project. Program rules change, so treat it as a starting point and check eligibility with your utility before you count on any money.
Is there a federal tax credit for new windows in 2026?
No. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (often called 25C) applied to qualifying property placed in service from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025. Windows had their own cap of $600 a year inside a larger $1,200 annual limit. Windows installed on or after January 1, 2026 do not qualify.
Two practical points follow from that:
- If your windows went in during 2025, the credit belongs on your 2025 return. If you missed it, ask a tax preparer whether an amended return makes sense for you.
- If a salesperson in 2026 says new windows qualify for a federal tax credit, ask them to show you which credit and where it is written. For windows installed this year, there is no federal credit to point to.
Consumers Energy window rebate
Consumers Energy is the electric utility for much of the Grand Rapids area. Its residential rebate page lists $15 per window for windows with a U-factor of 0.27 or lower, or windows rated ENERGY STAR for the Northern climate zone. It also lists $40 per patio door with a U-factor of 0.30 or lower. The program page says do-it-yourself installs can qualify and that applications must be received by December 31, without naming the year, so confirm the current deadline before your windows go in.
Consumers lists an application phone line (866-234-0445) on its rebate page. Program details can change during the year, so check eligibility with your utility rather than relying on this page or on a salesperson's summary.
DTE Energy window rebate
DTE is the natural gas utility for much of Grand Rapids. Its insulation and windows page lists $15 per unit for new energy-efficient windows. To qualify you need to be a DTE gas or gas and electric customer, DTE needs to be the primary heating provider for the home, and new construction is excluded. DTE publishes its U-factor and solar heat gain requirements in a table on that page; read it closely or call DTE, because the exact thresholds were not something we could confirm as text.
Some Grand Rapids-area homes get gas from DTE and electricity from Consumers. Whether the same windows can earn a rebate from both is a question for the utilities. Do not assume it, and do not let anyone build it into a price.

What about MiHER and other state programs?
Michigan Home Energy Rebates (MiHER), run by EGLE, rolled out in 2025 with two parts: a whole-home program based on modeled energy savings and an electric equipment program for households at or below 150% of area median income. The measures EGLE names for the whole-home side are insulation, air sealing and heating and cooling systems. Windows are not on that list, and in August 2026 EGLE paused new single-family approvals in its Detroit district. Treat MiHER as a possible fit for a broader energy project, not as window money.
If your Grand Rapids home was built before 1978 and you have a child under 6 or someone pregnant in the household, the city's Lead Hazard Control program is worth a call (616-456-3030). It has income limits, and whether it covers window work in your case is something only the program can tell you.
How much is a window rebate actually worth?
Be realistic about the scale. At $15 per window, ten qualifying windows earn $150 from one utility. Compare that with the cost of the project:
| Item | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Rapids, basic vinyl window installed (entry-level) | $342–$461 per window | homeyou, Sep 2026 |
| National average, per window | $800 (typical $450–$1,200) | Fixr, Jan 2026 |
| Whole house | 1-story 10–15 windows ≈ $8,000–$12,000 · 2-story 15–30 ≈ $12,000–$24,000 | Fixr, Jan 2026 |
Typical published ranges, not quotes (Fixr Jan 2026; homeyou Sep 2026; This Old House 2026). Grand Rapids installers' quotes vary.
A rebate is a small thank-you for buying an efficient window, not a reason to pick one product over another. The bigger lever is the window itself. Grand Rapids sees about 6,408 heating degree days a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals) and sits in IECC Climate Zone 5A, so a good glass package earns its keep over a long heating season. Kent County is almost certainly in ENERGY STAR's Northern zone, where qualifying windows need a U-factor of 0.22 or lower; check the label. Our energy-efficient windows page and the Grand Rapids window replacement cost guide go deeper on both.
Rebate-proof your quotes. Ask every installer to write the U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient for each window on the quote, and whether the unit carries an ENERGY STAR Northern label. That one line makes rebate paperwork simple and makes quotes easier to compare. Our guide to comparing window replacement quotes covers the rest of the list.
How to make sure your new windows qualify
- Confirm your utilities. Look at your gas and electric bills. If you are outside the core Grand Rapids area, including Holland and other lakeshore towns, check which companies actually serve your address before assuming either rebate applies.
- Read the current rebate page. Note the U-factor or ENERGY STAR requirement, the deadline and what proof the utility asks for.
- Get the ratings in writing. The NFRC label on each window lists its U-factor. Ask the installer to put the rating on the quote and the final invoice.
- Keep the labels and paperwork. Photograph the stickers before they come off the glass, and keep the itemized invoice.
- Apply promptly. Deadlines are tied to the program year, and late applications can be turned down.
If you are deciding between glass packages, triple pane vs double pane windows in Michigan walks through the trade-offs. Both a good double-pane window and a triple-pane window can clear the Consumers threshold; the label tells you which.
Watch the sales pitch, not just the rebate
Rebate talk sometimes shows up next to deep "limited-time" discounts during in-home sales visits. A $15 rebate does not change much, and a promotion is only as good as the total installed price behind it. Our explainer on "50% off" window sales shows how those offers are usually built. If you do sign at your kitchen table, Michigan law lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day (MCL 445.112).

Questions people ask
Is there a tax credit for replacement windows in 2026?
No. The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered qualifying windows placed in service from 2023 through 2025, with a $600 yearly cap for windows. It ended for windows installed after December 31, 2025. If your windows went in during 2025, ask a tax preparer about claiming it on that year's return.
Does Consumers Energy give rebates for new windows?
Consumers Energy lists a $15-per-window rebate for windows with a U-factor of 0.27 or lower or an ENERGY STAR Northern rating, plus $40 per qualifying patio door. Its page says applications must be received by December 31. Rules can change, so check eligibility with your utility before you buy.
Does DTE have a window rebate in Michigan?
DTE lists $15 per unit for new energy-efficient windows. You need to be a DTE gas or gas and electric customer with DTE as the primary heat provider, and new construction does not qualify. DTE publishes its rating requirements on its rebate page, so check them with DTE before ordering windows.
Can MiHER pay for new windows?
Probably not on its own. MiHER is Michigan's income-based home energy rebate program, delivered through participating contractors. The whole-home measures EGLE names are insulation, air sealing and heating and cooling systems; windows are not listed. If you are planning a broader energy upgrade, ask EGLE or a participating contractor what qualifies.
